Pay Scale

  • Shift Differential: afternoons + 2.5% and graveyards + 5%
  • Step 1 day shift starting at $35.12/hour ($73,045/year)
  • Step 10 day shift starting at $48.55/hour ($100,985/year)
  • 1 for 1 service credit for previous law enforcement experience up to 10 years (including Corrections and Military Police, depending on the specific details of the assignment)

Police Officer 1st Class

This program allows Officers with at least 8 years of experience (2 with WVC) to promote to a higher grade of Officer within the pay scale. This is a career track for those who intend to be the most highly trained, experienced, and dependable Officers.

  • Pay ranges from $45.30/hour ($94,224/year) to $51.88 ($107,913/year)

Paid Time Off

  • All full-time, benefited employees accrue PTO at the rates indicated below:
    • 0-4 years of service: 7.5 hours per pay period
    • 5-9 years of service: 8.5 hours per pay period
    • 10-14 years of service: 9.5 hours per pay period
    • 15-19 years of service: 10.5 hours per pay period
    • 20+ years of service: 11.5 hours per pay period
  • 1 for 1 service credit for previous law enforcement experience (including Corrections & Military Police, depending on the specific details of the assignment).

Holidays

  • 13 Holidays/year (130 hours/year)

Uniform Allowance

  • Officers are given a uniform allowance of $1,200/year.
  • This is split into payments of $100/month throughout the year.

Insurance

  • Health Insurance: the provider is Select Health
  • Dental: provided through Educators Mutual Insurance (EMI)
  • Mental Health: Blomquist Hale (EAP) & Select Health
  • Life Insurance: basic coverage provided by West Valley City, with additional coverage options available at employee cost
  • Short Term Disability (STDL): West Valley City provides benefited employees with a short-term disability plan for employees unable to work as a result of their own serious health condition.
    • Benefits are payable for up to 120 consecutive days after a two-week waiting period, and are compensated 60% of their pay.
    • Pregnancy is treated as any other illness for the purpose of STDL eligibility.

Take Home Vehicle

  • All Officers are allowed a take-home vehicle if their residence is within 35 miles of the border of West Valley City.
  • The cost is $1 per mile per paycheck (based on the shortest driving distance from the West Valley City border to their residence).

Residency Incentive

  • Officers can apply to receive $10,000 to purchase a home in West Valley City.
  • Officers can apply to receive $165/month for 5 years for living within West Valley City. This option is renewable every 5 years.
  • Officers can apply to receive both incentives with an agreement to maintain employment and residence within West Valley City for 5 years.

Retirement

  • West Valley City contributes to a retirement plan offered by Utah Retirement Systems (URS) for all benefited employees, with two options available.
  • New members of URS find additional Tier II Public Safety and Firefighter Pension information online.
  • Tier II employees (enrolled after July 2011) will automatically receive an additional 2% contribution into a 401(k) from West Valley City as a benefit. Employees who invest at least 2% of their income will receive an additional 2% match from the city.

Other Benefits

  • Resident Therapist: The West Valley City Police Department is proud to provide an in-house resident therapist. Sworn members of the department are required to speak with the therapist twice a year, depending on their assignment, and may schedule additional appointments as needed.
  • Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA): eligible employees may take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave during a rolling twelve-month period for qualified reasons including caring for a child in the first twelve months following birth, caring for an adopted or foster child in the first twelve months following placement, or incapacity due to the employee’s pregnancy, prenatal medical or childbirth.
  • Dependent Care Assistance Plan: With the Dependent Care account, you can set aside tax-free income to pay for qualified dependent care expenses, such as day care, that you normally pay with after-tax dollars.
  • Parental Leave: Provides up to four weeks of paid leave for bonding and caring for a newborn, adopted child, or child born through surrogacy. This leave runs concurrently with FMLA.
