Utah State law requires that every officer in the state receive forty hours of law enforcement training each year to maintain their law enforcement certification.

Officers are instructed in:

  • Arrest Control
  • Community Relations
  • Cultural Awareness
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations
  • Firearms Qualification
  • Legal Updates
  • Self Defense
  • De-escalation
  • Mental Health / Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)

The Training Unit is staffed by a Training Sergeant and Training Officers who coordinate and teach many of the training classes that are held.

Field Training Officer Program

The Training Unit oversees a 22-week Field Training Officer Program for newly hired officers. This task-based proficiency program teaches new officers the skills necessary to operate on their own as solo officers.
